BLUES BY FIVE
This cool quintet Blues By Five provides an intimate style of jazz as part of the 2017 Cool & Classic series hosted by Kenmore Uniting Church at 2 pm on Sunday, 19th March. The members have played in a variety of big bands but in 2013 were asked to put together a jazz quintet for a charity fund-raiser at the Red Hill Gallery. Since then, the group has added to the traditional jazz and Latin repertoire such as “Sway” and “The Girl from Ipanema” by improvising with bepop favourites like Dizzy Gillespie and “Bernie’s Tune” made famous by Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker.
The jazz group’s line-up includes popular vocalist Ruani Dias Jayasinha, Andy Will on double bass and Eddie Nelson on drums. The final two members, Nathan Howard (piano) and Ben Langford (trumpet), have played together in bands since High School and have over 20 years’ experience in teaching and performance. All have played at the Brisbane Jazz Club and in various big bands and ensembles and are enjoying exploring the potential of the quintet format for experiment.
So, if you want a Sunday afternoon of great music in a convenient venue, come to the Kenmore Uniting Church, 982 Moggill Road, Kenmore at 2 pm, followed by a delicious afternoon tea and time to talk to the musicians, all included in the price.
